The majority of the island of Ireland is taken up by the Republic of Ireland. The landscape on the West is mostly made up of mountains, hills and rugged cliffs. The Central Area has several lakes and glacial deposits of sand and clay. The longest river in Ireland, the River Shannon which is more than 380 km long, also crosses the central area.
Dublin is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Ireland. There are a number of historic buildings in Dublin that were built by the British during their occupation of 500 long years. There are many important attractions in Dublin including the Dublin Castle which was the seat of the British rule in the island, Phoenix Park, which is easily the world’s largest inner-city park, the General Post Office, which was made famous by the Easter Rising in 1916, Kilmainham Gaol, a Museum that was once a prison where the rebels of Easter Rising where locked up and executed and the Trinity College, where will find the book of Durrow and the book of Kells. The city was awarded the title of “UNESCO City of Literature” in the year 2010.
